My life as an athlete was no flash in the pan. It has been one crazy ambitious project after another spanning my entire adult life.
High-performance athletes typically dedicate several years to their craft. They usually have coaches for guidance and adequate funding. They usually train hard, and are often professional in the purest sense. Eventually, they may "retire" from their athletic careers. Some stay involved in sports, while many do not. Some continue to stay in shape, but many do not.
Throughout my Olympic career, I applied myself 100 % and even when I started to live a more 'normal' family life my application to other sports, projects and bucket lists was still borderline fanatical.
The reality is that the big achievements were made possible by the hundreds of smaller events. I competed in numerous world championships, and world cups, in both codes of speed skating. I raced hundreds of club races in cycling. participated in road cycling National championships, and I still hold the New Zealand 24-hour cycling record 786 km. I finished at the top end in 5 of the longest Coast to Coast races and explored the country and much of the world by foot, bike, or kayak. Most of my projects and have been endurance events which favours my design and body type. Nonetheless many of my best skating results were over a sprint. I even had a few cracks as a Powerlifter. I produced some impressive competition bests and placed 2nd in the New Zealand Powerlifting Champs. I continue to compete as Masters Athlete today. This year I took 4 silvers at the World Winter Masters Games in both codes of speed skating. A week later I competed in worlds longest ice skating race. 200km placing third in the non professional event.
Furthermore, I achieved all the above self-coached and on a shoestring budget. I couldn't help but learn a thing or two along the way.
